After just a few years of hanging out in our 'hood, the very pretty and pricey Minneapolis outpost of Jonathan Adler is closing. While most of his items are an investment (which is why I suspect it couldn't survive in this particular area), I'm still saddened to see good design move on out.
The one upshot, of course, is the major sale that resulted from the closing. Already a couple weeks into their clearance, it felt a little odd walking through the store and noticing the bare spots and floor sample tags among the glittering displays.
While expensive, I do like Adler's overall design style. His aesthetic is similar to Tory Burch (wow, those stores!) and Trina Turk. Both of which I like. A lot.
The friendly sales ladies told us the store will not be relocating, which is too bad. While Uptown may not have been able to sustain Adler, across town the North Loop is currently home to all kinds of upscale, high-design boutiques. Resettling among D.Nolo and Martin Patrick 3 would attract like-minded shoppers. Over the years, Uptown's retail pretty much resembles your run-of-the-mill mall. Which is a shame, given its prior history of unique, indie businesses.
So, farewell to another good spot! Your design might not have been exactly within this neighborhood's reach*, but I'm glad you brightened one of our corners for a bit.

*And speaking of DWR, which also shuttered its high-end Uptown showroom a few years back... That space will soon be home to something totally different but (hopefully) freaking amazing. Hoban, the beloved Korean restaurant in the 'burbs, is opening a second spot where Eames chairs and Nelson tables once stood. Can't wait!
